What a microcement wet room actually is

A microcement bathroom is a hand-applied, cement-based finish taken across the floor, up the walls and through the shower area as a single continuous surface. Instead of a grid of tiles and grout, the room reads as one plane, which is why even a compact bathroom in a Leeds or Bradford terrace feels calmer and larger once the joints disappear.

It suits anyone tired of scrubbing grout, anyone with an awkward or small room where a tile layout looks busy, and anyone specifying a spa-like en-suite where the shower should not look like a separate box bolted onto the room. We finish family bathrooms, en-suites, shower rooms, downstairs cloakrooms and hotel and commercial washrooms in the same way.

The moment to book it is when the room is stripped and first-fix is being planned, because sequence decides whether this works. Waterproofing and tanking are not part of our service: they are completed beforehand by others, along with any screeding, levelling, former installation and falls to the drain. We then apply and seal the finish over that prepared, watertight build-up.

That division is deliberate and it protects you. The tanking system carries the waterproofing responsibility, and the finish carries the look and the wear. What it costs to get wrong

Bathrooms punish a finish faster than any other room

A bathroom is the hardest room in the house on a surface: standing water, daily steam, temperature swings, shampoo and shower gel, cleaning products, and movement wherever a floor meets a tray or a former. Anything applied over a build-up that leaks, drains badly or moves will show it, and in a bathroom the consequence is not just a mark on the surface, it is water going somewhere it should not, into a ceiling below or into joists you cannot see.

Tiled bathrooms fail in a slower, more familiar way. Grout discolours, silicone lines blacken, and a room that was expensive to install starts looking tired within a few years, no matter how hard it is scrubbed. That is usually what brings people to seamless finishes in the first place: they do not want to redo a bathroom every seven years.

The expensive mistake is treating the finish as the waterproofing, or letting the trades run in the wrong order. Applying a decorative surface over incomplete tanking, insufficient falls or a moving substrate means stripping a finished bathroom back out, sanitaryware, glass, lighting and all, instead of a room that was built up correctly once. We will not install onto a build-up that is not ready, and we say so at survey stage rather than after the deposit.

Assuming the microcement is the waterproofing. Tanking is completed beforehand by others; we apply and seal the finish over it.
Falls to the drain, formers and trays set out badly, so water sits on the floor rather than leaving it.
Booking the finish before first-fix plumbing, extraction and lighting positions are settled, then cutting into a seamless surface.
Fresh screed, render or plaster that has not dried out, which shows through a thin bonded finish later.
Cleaning a new bathroom with bleach, limescale removers or abrasive creams, which attack the sealer rather than the dirt.

Tone, texture and sealer selection

We sample in the room, choosing tone and sheen for bathroom lighting and for how easily it will clean. A 45% deposit covers materials and secures your dates.

Application over the prepared build-up

Once the tanking is signed off by the trade that installed it, we prime and build the finish by hand in thin layers, detailing floor-to-wall junctions, trays, glass and drains.

Sealing, checks and handover

The surface is sealed appropriately for a wet environment, checked over with you and left with clear aftercare. Workmanship is guaranteed for one year.

Build-up, detailing and sealing in detail

A seamless bathroom is a sequence of trades, not a single product. Here is what has to be in place, who does what, and how the finish is detailed.

The build-up beneath the finish

Under a microcement wet room sits the part nobody sees: a stable substrate, the correct falls to the drain, a shower former or tray set level and secure, and a continuous tanking system taken up the walls to the required height. Tile backer board, sound screed and concrete are all common bases. Timber floors need to be rigid enough not to flex.

All of that is carried out by other trades before we arrive. We are not the tanking contractor, and we do not sign off waterproofing, but we do tell you precisely what the build-up needs to be at survey stage, and we will not apply a finish over a build-up that is not finished, dry and correct. That is the single most important thing to get right on this type of job.

Junctions, niches and the shower area

The craft in a seamless bathroom is in the junctions: where the floor turns up the wall, where the wall meets glass, where a niche is formed, where a bench or upstand sits, and where the finish meets a drain, tray or wastes. These are the points that get looked at closely and that water finds first, so they are detailed deliberately rather than run past.

Movement and expansion joints where the build-up requires them, and correctly formed corners and edges, are part of that detailing. Where a room has a wet bench, a recessed shelf, a sloping ceiling or a non-square corner, a hand-applied finish follows the geometry instead of asking the geometry to suit a tile size.

Sealing for a room that gets soaked daily

Sealer choice is what separates a bathroom finish that still looks new in five years from one that stains around the basin and the shower. We seal for a wet environment, taking account of the products the room will meet, shampoos, gels, cleaning sprays and limescale, and how often it will be wiped down.

Sheen is chosen alongside that. A softer sheen hides water spotting and everyday marks in a family bathroom; a deeper finish suits a hotel washroom or a feature en-suite. Sealers wear over time and can be refreshed, which is normal maintenance on a long-term surface rather than a fault.

Family bathrooms, en-suites and commercial washrooms

Family bathrooms get the most traffic and the least patience, so they are specified for cleaning and resilience: a forgiving tone, a robust sealer, and detailing around the bath and basin that will take daily splashing. En-suites and shower rooms are usually where clients want the full spa effect, with the finish carried across every surface and the shower reading as part of the room.

Downstairs cloakrooms are a small, high-impact use of the same finish, and on the commercial side hotel and hospitality washrooms benefit for the same reason: no grout to discolour, fast to clean, and a surface that photographs well. Do you tank the wet room?+

No. Waterproofing and tanking are not part of our service, they are completed beforehand by others, along with falls, formers and levelling. We then apply and seal the microcement appropriately for a wet environment over that prepared build-up.

How much does a microcement bathroom cost?+

We price a fixed figure for the whole job rather than a day rate or a per-square-metre rate, because bathrooms vary enormously in size, detailing and access. Quotes are free, and a 45% deposit covers materials and secures your installation date once you go ahead.

How long is the bathroom out of use?+

Each layer needs time to cure before the next, and the sealer needs time after that, so a seamless bathroom is a multi-day job. We give you the number of days and the dates in writing with your quote so you can plan around it.

Is microcement waterproof?+

Sealed microcement is designed for wet environments, but it is a finish rather than a waterproofing system. The waterproofing is the tanking beneath it, installed by others, which is why we insist that build-up is complete and correct before we start.

Will it go mouldy like grout does?+

There are no grout joints for mould to colonise, which removes the most common complaint in tiled bathrooms. A sealed, wiped-down surface with working extraction is far less hospitable to mould than a grid of grout lines and silicone.

Can it go over my existing tiles?+

Sometimes, if the tiles are sound, well bonded and the waterproofing beneath them is adequate for a wet room, but in bathrooms we are more cautious than elsewhere, because the tanking matters more than the tiles. We assess it at the survey and tell you plainly.

Is it slippery underfoot?+

Sheen and sealer choice affect how a wet floor feels, and we discuss that at selection stage for showers and family bathrooms specifically rather than applying one blanket specification.

Can I have underfloor heating?+

Yes. Microcement is confirmed compatible with underfloor heating and conducts heat well thanks to its thin build-up, which also helps a wet room floor dry quickly after use.

How do I clean it?+

A pH-neutral cleaner and a soft cloth or mop. Avoid bleach, limescale removers and abrasive creams, which attack the sealer. We cover aftercare at handover and tell you when the sealer would benefit from refreshing.
