Why the installer matters

Microcement is a skill,
not a product you buy

Two installers can use the same tub of material and hand you two completely different rooms. Seamless surfaces are applied by hand in thin layers, so the tone, the movement in the texture and the way the finish meets a doorway or a shower tray all come down to the person holding the trowel.

That is exactly how this company started. Jack Norfolk came across microcement as a specification on one of his own construction projects, could not find anyone locally with the experience to carry it out, trained in it himself and completed the job. One project led to the next, and The Decorative Surface Company now works on residential and commercial interiors across Yorkshire and beyond.

We only install systems we are certified in, we tell you plainly when a floor needs work before we can start, and we price the whole job up front. If a space is not right for microcement, you will hear that from us before you have spent anything.

Why choose us

Three years specialising
in one thing, done properly

Manufacturer-certified, not self-taught

Every system we install is one we are certified in by the manufacturer; IDEAL WORK UK for microcement and OX RESIN for resin flooring. That certification is what stands behind the finish on your floor.

Fixed price, never a day rate

You get one figure for the whole job before we start, so the cost cannot creep while we are on site. Quotes are always free, and a 45% deposit covers materials and secures your installation date.

A small team, on your job

The company is Jack Norfolk plus two others, three people in total. The person who quotes your project is the person applying the finish, so nothing gets lost between the sale and the trowel.

Insured and guaranteed

£10 million public liability cover, and a one-year workmanship guarantee on the installation. We will confirm exactly what that covers in writing with your quote.

Straight answers about your substrate

Microcement is only as good as what sits beneath it. If your floor needs screeding, levelling or a damp-proof membrane first, we say so, that preparation is carried out by other trades before we start.

Built for real rooms

Kitchens, wet rooms, hallways and commercial interiors get the appropriate sealer for how the space is actually used, not a single one-size specification.

How it works

From first visit
to sealed finish

01

Free site visit and fixed quote

We look at the space, check the substrate and talk through where the finish will and won't work. You get a fixed price for the job in writing, with no per-square-metre guesswork.

02

Colour and finish selection

Microcement is not one colour or one texture. We help you choose the system, tone and level of sheen with samples, so the finish suits the light in the room rather than a brochure.

03

Preparation and installation

Once the substrate is ready, screeding, levelling and tanking handled by other trades, we protect the space and build the finish up in layers, working to the agreed date secured by your deposit.

04

Sealing and handover

The surface is sealed for how the room is used, then we walk you through aftercare so the finish keeps looking the way it did on day one. Your workmanship guarantee runs for a year.

The plain version

Microcement and resin,
explained plainly

No jargon, no sales language, just what these surfaces are, where they belong and what they will not do.

01

What microcement actually is

Microcement is a cement-based coating applied by hand at only a few millimetres thick. Because it bonds to what is already there, concrete, screed, tile backer board, sound existing tiles; it can transform a room without the mess of digging a floor out. The result has no grout lines and no joints, which is why a modest kitchen or bathroom in a Leeds or Bradford terrace can suddenly feel considerably larger: the eye reads one continuous plane instead of a grid.

It also has no interest in staying flat and grey. Depending on the system, tone and sealer, microcement can look like polished stone, soft raw concrete, warm clay or brushed metal. That flexibility is why it appears as often on fireplaces, media walls, staircases and kitchen islands as it does on floors.

02

Microcement in wet rooms and bathrooms

A microcement wet room is one of the most requested projects we take on, and for good reason: a single seamless surface running from the floor up the walls removes the grout lines that discolour, and gives a shower a spa-like calm that tiling rarely matches. The important detail is sequence. Waterproofing and tanking are not part of our service, they are completed beforehand by others, and we then apply and seal the finish over that prepared, watertight build-up.

03

Resin flooring for harder-working spaces

Where a space needs to take real punishment, garages, utility rooms, workshops, commercial units and retail floors, poured resin is often the better answer. It cures to a tough, seamless, easy-to-clean surface with no joints for dirt to gather in. We install resin flooring using OX RESIN systems, and resin covers floors only, unlike microcement.

04

Homes and commercial projects across the North

Our work splits between high-end residential interiors, kitchen extensions, en-suites, hallways, staircases and feature walls, and commercial fit-outs where the client wants a considered, contemporary surface that will still look right in five years. Whether the project sits in Leeds, Harrogate, York, Sheffield, Manchester or as far as Windermere and Kendal, the process is the same: an honest appraisal of the substrate, a fixed price, a certified system and a sealed finish you can look after easily.

If you are weighing up microcement against tile, polished concrete or resin, the fastest way forward is a conversation about the room itself. Quotes are free and there is no obligation attached to one.

Common questions

Answers before you commit

Still unsure whether your space suits microcement? Call 07722 927058 and ask, no obligation.

Can microcement be laid over my existing floor?+

In most cases yes, microcement is applied at only a few millimetres thick over a sound, level substrate, so it can often go over existing surfaces without the disruption of ripping everything out. We survey the substrate before quoting.

Do you carry out the subfloor preparation?+

No. Screeding, damp-proof membranes and levelling are carried out by other trades before we arrive. We will tell you exactly what is required so it can be arranged, and we only install onto a substrate that is ready.

Is microcement suitable for underfloor heating?+

Yes, microcement is confirmed compatible with underfloor heating and conducts heat well because of its thin, seamless build-up.

Do you tank wet rooms and showers?+

Waterproofing and tanking are not part of our service; they are handled separately before we apply the finish. We then seal the microcement appropriately for a wet environment.

How do you price work, and are quotes free?+

Quotes are always free, and we price on a fixed price for the job rather than a day rate, so you know the figure before we start. A 45% deposit covers materials and secures your installation date.

Are you insured and certified?+

We carry £10 million public liability insurance and are manufacturer-certified with IDEAL WORK UK for microcement systems and OX RESIN for resin flooring. Our workmanship is guaranteed for one year.
