What Solidro is, and why we reach for it so often

Solidro is an IDEAL WORK cement-based microcement finish that reads as concrete but behaves nothing like it on site. Instead of a poured slab with movement joints, cold seams and a flat, uniform grey, Solidro is trowel-applied in thin layers over an existing floor, wall or worktop, built up and worked by hand until the surface carries the soft mottling, subtle tonal shift and quiet texture that a genuine concrete finish is prized for, but without a single joint across the whole run.

That seamlessness is the reason it gets specified so widely. A kitchen floor can turn the corner into a hallway, run up a stud wall, and continue behind a splashback with no trim, no threshold and no grout line breaking the eye. In open-plan Leeds conversions and Harrogate new-builds alike, that is usually the whole point of the brief: one continuous surface that makes a compact footprint read as a single, calm space.

What it costs to get wrong

A concrete look that goes wrong is hard to hide

Because Solidro's whole appeal is its texture and tonal variation, a poor application does not fail quietly. Trowel marks that were meant to look hand-worked instead look uneven; colour that was meant to mottle instead looks patchy in the wrong places, usually right where the light hits it hardest. Once the finish and any sealer are cured, correcting an uneven area means addressing a meaningful section of the run, not touching up a tile.

The other recurring problem is a mismatch between expectation and material. Concrete-look finishes are shown on sample boards and screens looking flawless and uniform, and clients sometimes expect that on the day. Solidro is a hand-applied, cement-based finish, and its character comes from the same tonal movement that makes poured concrete interesting. Agreeing what that variation will actually look like in your room, in your light, before application starts is what prevents disappointment on handover day.

Wet areas raise the stakes further. In a wet room or bathroom, the sealing system has to suit standing water and daily use, not just be tolerant of the odd splash. Applying a finish suited to a dry hallway in a shower enclosure, or sealing inconsistently across a floor-to-wall run, is where seamless surfaces come unstuck years later rather than on day one.

In detail

Colour, texture and application in detail

Solidro's result depends on decisions made before a trowel touches the wall or floor, and on the skill applying it afterwards. This is how we approach both.

Agreeing colour and texture before we start

Solidro's tonal mottling is its defining feature, and it varies with pigment choice, how the finish is worked by hand and how light moves across the room through the day. Rather than picking from a small chip, we build up a sample so you can see how a colour actually reads once it is trowelled, in the light your kitchen, bathroom or living space actually gets, not the light in a showroom.

The texture itself is a decision too. A more heavily worked surface reads closer to raw shuttered concrete, while a smoother pass gives a calmer, more refined backdrop. Both are valid, and the right one depends on the room, what sits in it, and whether Solidro is the whole story or a backdrop to furniture, tiling elsewhere or joinery.

Where Solidro suits Leeds, Bradford and Harrogate interiors

We see Solidro used most in open-plan kitchen-diners in Leeds and Bradford conversions, where a joint-free floor running under an island and into a utility area reads as one uninterrupted surface. Running Solidro from the floor up the shower wall removes that weak point entirely, provided the sealing system underneath and on top is specified for standing water and daily washing, not just splashes.

Tanking and waterproofing beneath the finish are carried out by other trades before we arrive; our part is the seamless Solidro surface and its sealing above that membrane. Getting the sequence right, and getting the right trades in the right order, is why we survey before we quote rather than pricing blind.

Furniture, worktops and where Solidro stops

Solidro is one of several microcement finishes we apply, and floors and walls are its natural home, including stairs, wet rooms and bathrooms where a continuous run is wanted. Microcement more broadly can also be applied to furniture and worktops, and if that is the brief alongside a Solidro floor or wall, we will say plainly whether Solidro or a different finish in the range is the better match for that surface.

What Solidro is not is a resin floor. Where a garage, workshop or heavily trafficked commercial floor needs the abrasion and chemical resistance of a resin system, we specify our OX RESIN system instead, floors only, and we will tell you honestly which is right for the space rather than defaulting to whichever we last talked about.

How long does Solidro take to install?+

What does the process actually involve?+

Can Solidro go over underfloor heating?+

Yes, Solidro is compatible with underfloor heating that is already installed, so you get a seamless concrete-look floor and a warm floor together.

Where can Solidro be used?+
